Vygotsky on Trial

Re-examining scaffolding and the zone of proximal development when the scaffold can be available continuously through AI.

The new scaffold

Vygotsky’s ideas about mediation and the zone of proximal development become newly relevant when learners can interact with AI at any hour. The system can prompt, explain, question and model, functioning in ways that resemble some forms of scaffold.

Assistance is not automatically development

The presence of help does not guarantee learning. A scaffold is educationally useful when it supports activity the learner gradually internalizes. If support never fades, dependency may replace development.

The social dimension

AI is not a substitute for the full social world of learning. Teachers and peers provide accountability, emotion, culture, disagreement and shared meaning that computational interaction cannot simply replicate.

Design implication

AI scaffolds should make thinking visible, reduce assistance over time and require the learner to demonstrate transfer. The measure of success is what the learner can eventually do without the scaffold.

A Caribbean question

In Caribbean classrooms, the quality of mediation also depends on language, examples and cultural context. AI systems need to be interrogated for what they know about local realities and what they omit.
